Students

The traditional complaint of the time-served worker, confronted with a fresh-faced student is, “they think they know it all” – proudly bearing excellent qualifications, full of knowledge but lacking the wisdom that comes with experience. The problem is as old as time, but the solution is very much available today.

The Shell Technology Enterprise Programme

The Shell Technology Enterprise Programme (STEP) is a UK-wide programme offering undergraduates project-based work placements within small to medium-sized businesses. The placements are available to any second or third-year student registered on a full- time degree course in the UK who recognises the vital benefits of putting into practice what they are studying. The programme also helps companies implement a particular project that may have been put on hold due to a lack of resources – be it time, money or knowledge.

Growing in popularity

The STEP programme is growing in popularity every year and now receives nearly seven applications for every placement available.  STEP Project Manager Hazel Feely said: “The STEP programme provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain experience in the industry they are studying and put their skills to use. Gaining the experience stands them in a much better position when the time comes to seek employment as they stand out among other graduates having gained some valuable work experience.” “The companies that take students on placements also benefit – the students are not just another pair of hands, as we have found that they often bring with them a fresh new approach to business."
